In Memory of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia
December 5, 2018, is the tenth anniversary of the repose of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia (1929-2009).
Patriarchia.ru has posted a photo-album from the Patriarchal Press Service, “In Memory of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy,” showing the various periods in the life of the late primate, who led the Russian Orthodox Church over the course of 18 years, from 1990-2008, a breakthrough period in the history of the Fatherland.
During that time, the Church underwent a rebirth, with the Moscow Patriarchate establishing a great number of church, monasteries and dioceses; the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in the social life of the former USSR, which is part of its canonical territory, grew; the canonical unity of the Russian Church in the Fatherland and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia was reestablished; the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia who suffered during the period of persecution of the Church in the 20th century were canonized.
