During that time, the Church underwent a rebirth, with the Moscow Patriarchate establishing a great number of church, monasteries and dioceses; the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in the social life of the former USSR, which is part of its canonical territory, grew; the canonical unity of the Russian Church in the Fatherland and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia was reestablished; the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia who suffered during the period of persecution of the Church in the 20th century were canonized.
